Week of Nov. 14 - The Switch Has Been Flipped

What a difference a week makes. The switch has been flipped and the warm November we have all been enjoying has changed to unseasonably cold. Unfortunately for golf, the long term forecast shows more of the same.

We are currently in full winter preparation mode and managing the golf course for next season. The mowers are put away and the agronomy team's focus now is on conditions for the spring of 2023.

Light sand topdressing on 10

The week started with a light topdress to greens. This practice is done after our last cut to greens and helps with late season playability after cutting has ceased for the season. With rain coming on Tuesday night/ Wednesday it was the perfect time to topdress and let the rain wash the sand in. Greens will be topdressed heavily again at the end of the season on our winter setting.

Greens being lightly topdressed:

After topdressing greens we worked on applying topdressing and performing solid tine aeration to a variety of fairway spots that are prone to ice formation and winter kill.

After the rain moved through on Wednesday we began our winter snow mold applications. Greens and all fairways except one have been sprayed. We will be finishing up all other play areas Monday and Tuesday of next week.

The green surround extension on 15 has germinated and has reached a level that we are happy with going into winter. We think that the plants have established enough that they should be able to survive winter and provide erosion control to this area.

I was recently asked if we planted bulbs this year at the clubhouse. 450 Daffodil bulbs have been planted along with over 300 Tulip bulbs. We incorporated more Daffodils this year as they are not as prone to deer damage. Last spring we saw a lot of deer eating our tulips! We will also be spraying the Tulips this year to help with the deer damage, as well as incorporating more pansies in the spring.
